Understanding Heat and Temperature
An Overview of Thermal Physics
Heat
Heat is the form of energy which produces the sensation of warmth.
Its SI unit is Joule, and other unit is calorie (1 cal = 4.2 Joule).
Heat always transfers from a hotter to a colder body.
Temperature
Temperature is a measure of the hotness or coldness of a body.
Heat flows from one body to another due to the difference in their body temperature.
Scale of Temperature
Celsius scale: Freezing point = 0°C, Boiling point = 100°C.
Fahrenheit scale: Freezing point = 32°F, Boiling point = 212°F.
Kelvin scale: Ice point = 273K, Boiling point = 373K.
Thermometers
Clinical thermometers measure human body temperature, ranging from 96°F to 110°F or 35°C to 43°C.
Anomalous Expansion of Water
Water decreases in volume until 4°C, becomes minimum at 4°C, then expands again.
Transmission of Heat
Conduction: Heat transfer in solids.
Convection: Heat transfer in fluids.
Radiation: Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves.
Breeze
Sea Breeze: Cooler air from the sea moves toward the shore during the day.
Land Breeze: Cooler air from the land moves toward the sea at night.
Conductors of Heat
The best conductor: Silver (Ag).
The poorest conductor: Lead (Pb).
